Read on for some insights from Basic Soul Unit in this exclusive interview.
1) Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’ve been an early bird mainly on account of waking up to walk my daughter to school since the last 3 or 4 years. Even after a night out sometimes I’ll end up waking around 7:30 am instinctively. I don’t hit up after parties anymore!
2) What is your home city and what makes it special?
I’m based out of Toronto, Canada and have lived here since 1984 (I was born in Hong Kong). The best thing about Toronto is the multicultural make up. There’s so many different cultures and influences to take in. I definitely would not have taken the same musical path if I hadn’t moved here. Another bonus from this is the diversity of authentic cuisine we get to try here.
3) The term DJ’s DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ’s DJ?
I’d have to go with my label partner Jason Ulrich aka J-UL. I’ve known him since probably the late 90’s and we’re musically very much in sync. He’s one of Toronto’s best kept secrets largely because he hasn’t produced much music but this is changing as he’s finally getting his hands into production. In Toronto, he’s known as a DJ with deep crates who can work the dance floor with a gospel boogie track as easily as a hard crunching techno number.
4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?
An appreciative crowd, dedicated promoters, DJs and artists. This is my impression based on my limited personal experience. I’ve been to Australia on 2 tours and had a blast both times. I don’t imagine it’s easy to run things with costs and logistics in Australia so there’s certainly gotta be a level of dedication there.
5) What has been the stand out track that you’ve playing this month?
It’s a classic this month. I rediscovered “Moments in House” by Essence which flips Moments in Love and turns it into a NYC deep house workout. Produced by Wayne Gardiner, one of my favourite producers from back in the day and underrated.
6) Tell us all about your next up-coming release?
My next full release will be an ep on Steffi’s Dolly label which comes with a nice Voiski remix. I will also have an ep out on a new Italian label called Ribbon with some works from my vaults. Besides that there are some remixes as well including one for Trinity on Nightime Drama (speaking of Australian electronic music).
